LeBron James

In the last several years, you may have heard something about this man. I am here to tell you that today, January 29, 2006, he has officially arrived.

Today, three hours ago or so, Lebron led the Cavs to a come-from-behind victory over the Phoenix Suns, with a dominating second half highlighted by an absolutely amazing fourth quarter sequence in which he sailed in from behind streaking Sun Leandro Barbosa to block his shot hard off the glass, grabbed the ball, and charged down the court to crush a slam dunk in the face of Shawn Marion. You'll see it on SportsCenter tonight if you tune in. For the game, LeBron totalled 44 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists, which are stellar numbers by anyone's definition. It was the Cavs fifth straight victory.

Yet, when I tuned into espn.com seconds ago to check the highlights, there was not one single mention of LeBron or the Cavs on the front page. On a big news day, you might expect to see a link to the box score titled "44 for LeBron as Cavs win fifth straight." On a slower news day, like today, you might see a big picture of LeBron with a headline, that perhaps might read "Domination." But there was nothing. And why was there nothing? Because it's routine. LeBron is averaging 37.2 points and almost eight rebounds and almost eight assists during this winning streak. He is completely dominant in every facet of the game save defense. He is 21 years old. Today's game, this ridiculous game, is just another game from him. Watch him tomorrow night in Charlotte, and he'll do it again. This is the beginning of the career of the greatest basketball player who ever lived.

Notes

"I like that you sign your emails KPC, this seems like a legit abbreviation for a rap producer or a gang or something. It has a nice cadence." ~Clint

As of the 12th, 193,268 people had voted for Amare Stoudamire for the NBA All Star Team, despite the fact that he has not played one moment of basketball this year due to injury, and is not expected to return until after the All Star Game is over. Could one of you people who voted for him please drop me a line and explain why?

There's probably going to be another hiatus in the proceedings, but I won't committ to it quite yet.

Larry Hughes is hurt, and the Cavs have no backup for him, as noted in this space in November. Damon Jones has been a complete disaster starting in his place. The downward spiral has begun, with the team dropping four of five since his injury. Making the playoffs now becomes the goal, with Hughes' return scheduled for March. Gulp.
